What's In a Name?

Ascension John ColtraneThe Ascension Project draws its inspiration from the simple, yet often difficult, act of rising up. While some people might envision explorers ascending a steep mountain pass, our image is less glamorous: climbing a ladder, rung by rung.

Jazz great John Coltrane used Ascension as inspiration for his landmark 1965 album. Coltrane's Ascension expresses both chaos and order, conveying through music much of what our boys are experiencing today. The theme is struggle, conflict, hope, setbacks, perseverance, and, ultimately, redemption.

A jazz critic wrote that Coltrane “had to continue to search deeper and deeper into himself and exercise his own dissonances, his own demons.” Our boys are also struggling to liberate themselves.
